Aspromonte is a land of wonders, a treasure chest of biodiversity, the custodian of ancient humanity, the setting of unique landscapes.
Aspromonte is the acrocorus that towers in the center of the Mediterranean. It is a mountain that offers a great natural and cultural heritage, in that it shows signs of an important past. Over the centuries it has been traversed by Greeks, Romans, wandering monks, fugitives, brigands, shepherds, flocks and wild animals of all kinds.
Scattered within the park are various visitor centers which offer a summary of the park’s natural and cultural heritage. The centers are: Bova Visitor Center – Gerace Visitor Center – Mammola Visitor Center – San Giorgio Morgeto Visitor Center – San Luca Visitor Center – Villaggio de Leo Visitor Center – Zomaro Visitor Center – S. Stefano d’Aspromonte Biodiversity Observatory – Bagaladi Gateway.
Gambarie tourist hub
Gambarie is a tourist resort located in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park, one of the most important protected areas in Italy.
Famous for its ski slopes and for the picturesque landscapes, Gambarie is a popular destination for mountain tourism all year round. It rises 35 km from the city of Reggio Calabria in the municipality of Santo Stefano d’Aspromonte, about 1,400 meters above sea level. The village represents the Aspromonte tourist hub and offers hospitality and entertainment, being equipped with numerous hiking trails, equipped picnic areas, accommodation and commercial activities. It also offers multiple leisure activities: tournaments, marathons, motor rallies, events, concerts, festivals, etc..
The two-seater chairlift leads to the peaks of Mt. Sirocco and Mt. Nardello, where a breathtaking views of the Strait of Messina, Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands, Unique prerogative for a mountain resort.
Mountain trips
Aspromonte is rich in hiking trails that you can hike on your own or by relying on experienced guides in the area. Very impressive are the various waterfalls in the heart of the Park: Forgiarelle, Maesano, Mundu and Galasia. Also very interesting is the route from Bova to Amendolea to explore the heart of the Grecanica area. And still many other paths leading to: Pietra Cappa (the largest monolith in Europe), Montalto (the highest peak in Aspromonte), etc..
The charming villages of Aspromonte are a popular destination for tourists of all kinds; among them the most popular are Bova and Gerace. The village of Bova, perched 900 m above sea level, represents the capital of the Grecanica area; while Gerace still retains the characteristics of the ancient medieval village and presents an interweaving of styles from the various civilizations: Byzantine, Romanesque, and Norman. Also very characteristic are Amendolea, Precacore and Roghudi Vecchio, now uninhabited.
The museum network of Aspromonte National Park embraces different museum types: from art to nature, from history to archaeology, from culture to ancient traditions. Park museums guard the identity of the area and allow visitors to discover the historical, artistic, environmental and productive heritage of a land experienced by ancient civilizations-Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Norman.
The Gambarie tourist hub offers hospitality and welcome to spend peaceful days in the mountains.
