In an enchanting setting, home to ancient myths and legends, stands Scylla one of the most striking places in Calabria. Praised by Homer, renowned for the district of Chianalea defined as one of the most village in Italy, Scilla is certainly a favorite destination of national and international tourism.
The sea and the beach
The most popular beach is a wonderful bay nestled between two rocky outcrops; it lies in the Marina Grande district, which hosts numerous bathing establishments in the summer season. The seabed is a natural paradise of flora and fauna, especially in the area where the cliffs slope steeply into the sea. The well-known “Shallows of Scylla” are true biological oases rich in two-tone gorgonians, corals, anthias, secular cerianti and red algae. In addition, the rocks have very striking natural ravines and caves, habitats of moray eels and numerous species of fish.
Village of Chianalea
Chianalea referred to as the Venice of the South is an ancient fishing district that presents visitors with picturesque stone alleys and old mansions nestled by the sea. Houses are sometimes separated from each other by narrow streets, much like canals, exploited as landing places for fishermen's boats. To this day, the striking mosaic of Chianalea is one of the most popular destinations for tourists of all kinds, who flock to the main street to enjoy an aperitif, buy a souvenir, or simply take a stroll. One of the main attractions of the village, are the seaside platforms of the various restaurants, authentic stilts where you can enjoy traditional seafood dishes.
Ruffo Castle
Nestled on a rocky outcrop dividing the Marina Grande district from the village of Chianalea, Scylla Castle is a cultural center open to visitors. The ancient defensive fortification was presumably built in the Magno-Greek period and, in Roman times, assumed a decisive role in the defense of the city of Reggio from the Bruzi. In the Middle Ages, the building became an important military center presided over by the Norman Robert the Juiscard. It was later purchased by the Ruffo family, which transformed it into a noble residence.
Historic center of St. George
In the upper part of the town, about 72m from the sea, is the historic center of San Giorgio, which extends around Piazza San Rocco, a terrace on the Strait that houses the Town Hall, the Church of San Rocco and the statue of the mythological mermaid Scylla. The square stands on a belvedere overlooking the bay of Marina Grande and the Castle. From the belvedere it is also possible to admire the enchanting view of the Strait of Messina with Punta Faro and Lake Ganzirri, against the backdrop of the Aeolian Islands. Around the Church of San Rocco are characteristic alleys that lead to the ancient town of Bastia.
